Making the Audit Work for Both Sides

An audit doesn't have to be adversarial. The best ones are collaborative—they identify gaps early and give the fabricator a chance to address them before production starts. This approach builds trust and sets clear expectations.

EPC contractors should provide the fabricator with the audit scope ahead of time. Define what will be reviewed: shop drawings, welding procedure specifications, non-destructive testing plans, coating specifications, and delivery schedules. Give the fabricator time to gather documentation and prepare. A surprise audit might catch more issues, but it also creates tension that doesn't serve the project.

For the plant visit itself, bring a team that includes both engineering and quality personnel. One person catches the technical details; the other reads the room—how the crew interacts, whether supervisors are engaged, whether safety practices are taken seriously.

When the Audit Says No

Sometimes the audit reveals deal-breakers. That's not failure—that's the audit doing its job. Better to walk away before signing than to manage a crisis during construction.

The decision to proceed should be based on objective criteria, not pressure to keep the schedule. If the fabricator lacks the equipment, the experience, or the quality systems for the specific project requirements, the risk transfer isn't worth the upfront savings. A responsible EPC contractor documents the findings, communicates the decision clearly, and moves to the next candidate.
